My "Night and Day in NOLA" Bead Dog got sponsored!! That means I got to pick one up to paint, and it will be on display at Trinity Episcopal School & Church in the Garden District. I'm very honored and excited, especially because the students apparently voted on designs and they chose mine! Nothing like being chosen by a discerning group on the merit of your art alone. I'm putting in my hours to make this the best Bead Dog I can make, as a thank you for their support and sponsorship.

The LSPCA is one of my favorite organizations. They never fail to impress, and this season they are hosting a city-wide Mardi Gras Bead Dog art installation!!! Artists from around the community are contributing, and I'm hoping to join in the ranks. I've submitted my designs, and now I need a sponsor!! Please see my three posted designs:

Original paintings in addition to affordable limited-edition giclees on show at Cafe Carmo, 527 Julia Street!

I'm very excited to have my works here, not least of all because Carmo is one of my favorite NOLA places for lunch/dinner. Carmo has the perfect mix of local food and tropical flavors, I'm getting hungry just writing about it... They offer AMAZING vegetarian and vegan options, making exceptional use of faux meats and fresh fruits/vegetables to produce hearty meals that are totally craveworthy.

I'll be at the Cafe on December 3rd, to meet, great, and eat as part of the monthly NOLA Art Walk, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Please come out and check out the works, enjoy some incredible gumbo, banana cake, and veggie dishes, and take in all the artistic splendor Julia Street has to offer!!

My artist friend Matthew Peck and I are on the Artist's Panel for this year's New Orleans Art-o-Matic!! It will be at Cathedral Studios, 527 Julia Street, Saturday October 22nd at 6 p.m.

The idea of Art-o-Matic is that the Artist's Panel get together to create fast, spontaneous works of art, and these works become available for ultra reasonable prices the moment they are finished.

This Art-o-Matic, I will be making charcoal and oil paintings/drawings on mixed-media, acid free paper. They will probably look something like this, which is a practice one I did to make sure I could work with the materials quickly:
Come this Saturday!!! Get a signed original!! Frame it and put it in your house!!! You can get each piece for only $20!!!

People say things get busy in New Orleans in late September/early October. After painting, reading, and overheating all summer, I'm finally starting to see why the locals say NOLA heats up in the fall. Charity events, conferences, parties, festivals — recovering from each late night in time for the next event is a delicate process that takes much more practice than I currently have.

Yet, we have to say that yesterday and last night were totally worth it. The festivities kicked off at 2 p.m. with the 10th Annual Ezra Open, a charity bowling tournament held in Mid-City.

Pic from yesterday's bowling tournament!
At about 7 p.m. the bowling teams and other patrons gathered at the Theatre at Harrah's Casino for a party of epic proportions. The Better Than Ezra guys, who had partied, bowled, and graciously hosted all day, played a killer set with Harrah's twinkling blue and white stars glowing behind them. Items were auctioned to generous donors, friendships were made, scenes were caused, and funds were raised for the City of New Orleans. Let's hope it's the first of many good times for good causes!!!

SO MANY THINGS going on in New Orleans this past weekend! First, we had the RED DRESS RUN on Saturday morning.  The Gallery was right on the run route! (See pictures at the end of this post!)

And then of course, in the evening we had DIRTY LINEN NIGHT!!! We had so much fun, and drank SO MUCH RUM. We owe a HUGE thanks to Old New Orleans Rum, and especially to Kim, the events coordinator, and Gail, who tirelessly stuck with us through the ENTIRE night and served fabulous cocktails to the legions of rum lovers. We got tons of compliments on the drinks and are now saddled with the disappointing task of informing returning visitors that ONO Rum is not a regular offering at the Gallery. We also are indebted to our friend EJ at Printing ETC, who battled the traffic and red dress runners to gallantly deliver gorgeous bookmark business cards. We are ashamed to admit we only gave a day's notice on the order, so having them at the Gallery to distribute was no small feat. We're changing the name of Printing ETC in our computer address book to "Miracles by EJ".

At the end of the night, we were left with wonderful memories and ten empty rum bottles. We're not ones to let a good thing go to waste, so we decorated the bottles and made a new window display.

As you can see on our drop-down sign, Old New Orleans Rum is graciously donating their expertise — they will be making cocktails and offering tastings all evening.

Today is the 24th, which means tomorrow and the next day is the Festival of the Arts at Walt Whitman High, in Bethesda, Maryland. If you're in the area you should totally check it out! I wish I could go — there is some great talent, and it is always fun to see artists' styles when they're still emerging. In HS most artists are still figuring things out, and at exhibits like this you can catch a glimpse of skills and sensibilities as they develop. Much of the work is for sale, and proceeds go to the Arts programs at the school. And if this year is anything like previous years, there will be plenty to be impressed by!

My mama and my sister Tory will be there with some of my work in the Alumni Room. You should totally visit her! She's a hoot. Tell her I say "hi" and "thank you" for taking care of my dog, Chloe.
